Where to find your kWh usage figures
Your annual kWh usage figures appear on your energy bill or in your online supplier account. Look for "annual consumption" or "yearly usage" rather than monthly figures, as monthly usage varies significantly with the seasons and gives less accurate annual estimates.
If you have a smart meter, your supplier's app will show your exact consumption. If you do not have your kWh figures, use the typical usage presets above based on your household size. These are based on Ofgem's Typical Domestic Consumption Values and give a reasonable estimate for most homes.
The calculator uses Q2 2026 Ofgem price cap rates. If you are on a fixed deal, your actual unit rate and standing charge may differ. Check your tariff details and enter your own rates for a more accurate result. If your bill looks significantly higher than this estimate, it may be worth comparing tariffs to see if a cheaper deal is available.

Questions people ask
Your energy bill has two components: the unit rate (pence per kWh) multiplied by how much energy you use, plus a daily standing charge that applies regardless of usage. Annual bill = (kWh used x unit rate) + (365 x daily standing charge), for both gas and electricity separately.
For Q2 2026 (1 April to 30 June 2026), the Ofgem price cap average rates are: electricity 24.67p per kWh with a standing charge of 57.21p per day; gas 5.74p per kWh with a standing charge of 29.09p per day. These are England, Scotland and Wales averages including 5% VAT. Rates vary by region and meter type.
This calculator uses Ofgem price cap average rates. Your actual bill may differ because rates vary by region, your payment method (direct debit rates differ from prepayment), and your specific tariff. If you are on a fixed deal, your unit rate may be different from the cap rate used here.
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the unit of energy used to measure electricity and gas consumption. Your annual kWh usage appears on your energy bill or in your supplier's online account or app. Look for "annual consumption" or "yearly usage". Smart meters track this automatically.
