If your handset is paid off, there's very little reason to stay on a phone contract. A SIM only plan gives you the same calls, texts and data for a lot less, because you're no longer paying for a phone you already own. Most people who make the switch save somewhere between £15 and £30 a month. The networks won't chase you to point this out. Once your contract ends, they're quite happy to keep billing you the full amount.
SIM only vs phone contract: the real numbers
| Data allowance | Typical contract | SIM only equivalent | Monthly saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5GB | £25 to £35/month | £5 to £8/month | £17 to £27 |
| Unlimited | £40 to £55/month | £15 to £25/month | £20 to £35 |
| Unlimited + 5G | £45 to £60/month | £18 to £30/month | £20 to £35 |
Typical market ranges as of July 2026. Exact prices vary by network and promotion.
The gap is widest on unlimited plans. A typical unlimited phone contract runs £40 to £55 a month, while the equivalent SIM only plan sits closer to £15 to £25 on a 30-day rolling basis, with no contract to sign. Same network, same data, roughly half the bill.
Which network is right for you?
The big four networks, EE, O2, Three and Vodafone, own the masts. The networks below rent that same coverage and usually charge less for it. These are the networks we compare. Hover each one for the short version:
Chattr
30-day plans with no credit check, EU roaming included.
iD Mobile
Big allowances for less, EU roaming included on most plans.
Talkmobile
Vodafone coverage for less, with EU roaming included.
ASDA Mobile
Flexible bundles, top up as and when you need.
Ecotalk
Profits go to giving land back to nature.
VOXI
Endless social media use on selected plans.
Rewild Mobile
25% of profits fund UK rewilding, dual-network coverage.
1p Mobile
Ultra-low pay-as-you-use rates on EE coverage.
Every network above is an MVNO, meaning it rents capacity from a big network and charges less for it. Coverage is identical to the host network, so if you already get a good signal from O2, Three, EE or Vodafone where you live, an MVNO on that same network gives you the same coverage for less money. There's no catch beyond a smaller customer service operation.
Questions about SIM only deals
A SIM only deal gives you a SIM card with calls, texts, and data but no handset. You put it in a phone you already own. SIM only plans are significantly cheaper than phone contracts because you are not paying off a handset. They come on 30-day rolling, 12-month, and 24-month terms from all major UK networks.
Yes for most people. If your phone is paid off, switching to SIM only typically saves £15 to £30 per month for the same data. Over a year that is £180 to £360 saved. The only reason to stay on a contract is if you want a new handset and want to spread the cost.
Yes. Text PAC to 65075 and your current network must send your PAC code within two minutes. Give it to your new network when you sign up and your number transfers within one working day. You will not lose your number during the switch.
30-day plans cost slightly more per month but let you cancel or change anytime. 12-month plans lock you in but offer a lower monthly price. If you are confident in your usage and network choice, 12 months offers better value. If you want flexibility, the small premium on a 30-day plan is worth it.
If your phone is unlocked it will work on any UK network. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked. Phones bought on contract may be locked, so contact your current provider to unlock it for free once your contract has ended. iPhones bought directly from Apple are always unlocked.
