A SIM only plan gives you the same calls, texts and data for a lot less, because you're no longer paying for a phone you already own. Most people who make the switch save somewhere between £15 and £30 a month. The networks won't chase you to point this out. Once your contract ends, they're quite happy to keep billing you the full amount.

The gap is widest on unlimited plans. A typical unlimited phone contract runs £40 to £55 a month, while the equivalent SIM only plan sits closer to £15 to £25 on a 30-day rolling basis, with no contract to sign. Same network, same data, roughly half the bill.
Which network is right for you?
Every major UK network sells SIM only plans, but they compete on different things. Some go hard on price, some on coverage, some on extras like roaming or international calls. In short:

Smarty, giffgaff, Lebara and iD Mobile are MVNOs, meaning they rent capacity from the big four networks and charge less for it. If you already get a good signal from O2, Three, EE or Vodafone where you live, an MVNO on that same network gives you identical coverage for less money. There's no catch beyond a smaller customer service operation.

SIM only plans are significantly cheaper than phone contracts because you are not paying off a handset. They come on 30-day rolling, 12-month, and 24-month terms from all major UK networks.

30-day plans cost slightly more per month but let you cancel or change anytime. 12-month plans lock you in but offer a lower monthly price. If you are confident in your usage and network choice, 12 months offers better value. If you want flexibility, the small premium on a 30-day plan is worth it.
If your phone is unlocked it will work on any UK network. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked. Phones bought on contract may be locked, so contact your current provider to unlock it for free once your contract has ended. iPhones bought directly from Apple are always unlocked.
