What we compare for you

We look beyond headline discounts and focus on what actually affects your bill.

Usage rates

What you pay for each unit of electricity or gas, this is where most savings are found.

Daily charge

Lower daily charges can make a big difference, especially for low or moderate users.

Usage time

We factor in different peak and off-peak rates to match plans to how you actually live.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, for most households. Tariffs vary between suppliers and the difference can add up to hundreds of pounds a year. Fixed rate deals can offer real savings and protect you from future price rises.

Most switches complete within 5 working days. There is no disruption to your supply. The same gas and electricity reaches your home, only the billing company changes.

A limit set by Ofgem on the unit rates and standing charges suppliers can charge on standard variable tariffs. It caps the rate, not your total bill. Reviewed quarterly based on wholesale prices.

A fixed tariff locks your unit rate for 12 or 24 months. A variable tariff moves with the market subject to the Ofgem cap. Fixed gives certainty. Variable gives flexibility.

Switching is free. If you are on a fixed tariff and leave early, an exit fee may apply as stated in your contract. On a standard variable tariff there is no exit fee.

If you owe less than £500 per fuel you can generally still switch. The debt usually transfers to your new supplier. Over £500, your current supplier can block the switch.

The two numbers that matter are your unit rate (pence per kWh) and daily standing charge (pence per day). Compare these between tariffs, not the total bill which varies with usage.

Your supply will not be cut off. Ofgem appoints a new supplier through the Supplier of Last Resort process. Your credit balance is protected and transfers automatically.
