The short answer
Solar support in Tasmania comes mainly from the Australian Government, not the state. A federal scheme reduces the upfront cost of solar panels, and a separate federal scheme does the same for home batteries. On top of that, Tasmania has a regulated feed-in tariff that credits you for surplus power you export to the grid. Tasmania does not currently run its own state solar panel rebate. The figures are reviewed regularly, so the best way to know what applies to your system is a quote, where your installer applies the current support.
The federal scheme for solar panels
The main support that lowers the upfront cost of a solar panel system in Tasmania is a national scheme run by the Australian Government. It applies in Tasmania exactly as it does in every other state and territory.
The scheme works through small-scale technology certificates. When an eligible system is installed, it creates a number of certificates based on the system's size and its expected generation. Those certificates have a market value, and in practice your installer claims them and applies that value as a discount on the price you pay. You do not apply separately or wait for a payment, the saving comes off the upfront price at the point of sale.
The value of the certificates moves with the market and the scheme reduces over time on a set schedule, so the exact discount on a given system changes. Your installer's quote reflects the rate that applies when you buy.
The federal scheme for home batteries
Home batteries have their own federal support, separate from the solar panel scheme. It is a national program that reduces the upfront cost of an eligible home battery, and it is available to Tasmanian households alongside the rest of Australia.
It runs through the same certificate mechanism as the solar scheme. An eligible battery generates certificates based on its usable storage capacity, and your installer typically applies that value as a discount on the battery price. As with solar panels, it is applied upfront rather than claimed back later.
One important point: the battery scheme steps down on a set schedule, so the discount per unit of storage gradually reduces over time. That means the support available now is not fixed indefinitely. A current quote is the only reliable way to see what the scheme is worth for a specific battery at the time you buy.
The Tasmanian feed-in tariff
A feed-in tariff is the credit you receive for surplus solar power your home exports to the grid. When your panels generate more than your home is using, the excess flows to the grid and you are credited for it on your power bill.
Tasmania has a regulated minimum feed-in tariff. It is set by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator, and it is reviewed and reset for each financial year. Electricity retailers are not allowed to pay below the regulated minimum, though a retailer may choose to offer more.
Because the feed-in tariff credits exported power rather than power you use yourself, the bigger saving from solar usually comes from using your own generation directly. The feed-in tariff is a useful addition on top of that, not the main benefit.
Tasmanian solar support at a glance
The summary below reflects the position as at the date shown. Solar support is reviewed regularly, and the feed-in tariff in particular is reset for each financial year, which begins on 1 July. Always confirm the current detail with your installer when you request a quote.

A few practical points help you get genuine value from the schemes rather than just assuming a headline figure.
Use a quote, not a headline
The federal schemes are applied by your installer at the current rate. A quote shows the real discount, a general figure online may be out of date.
Check the timing
The battery scheme steps down over time and the feed-in tariff resets each financial year. When you buy can affect the support you receive.
Value self-use over export
Using your own solar directly usually saves more than the feed-in tariff credits for exporting it. Size the system around your usage.
Ask the installer to itemise it
A good quote shows the federal support as a clear line, so you can see the price before and after it is applied.
Tasmania solar rebates FAQ
Is there a solar rebate in Tasmania?
Tasmania does not currently run its own state rebate specifically for solar panels. The main support is federal: a national scheme reduces the upfront cost of solar panels, and a separate federal scheme does the same for home batteries. Tasmania also has a regulated feed-in tariff for exported power.
What is the feed-in tariff in Tasmania?
It is the credit you receive for surplus solar power exported to the grid. Tasmania has a regulated minimum feed-in tariff set by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator, which was 8.782 cents per kWh for the 2025-26 financial year. It is reset each financial year, and retailers may offer more than the minimum.
How does the federal solar scheme work?
When an eligible system is installed it creates small-scale technology certificates based on its size and expected generation. Those certificates have a market value, and your installer claims them and applies the value as an upfront discount on your system price. You do not apply separately.
Is there support for solar batteries in Tasmania?
Yes, through a federal scheme that reduces the upfront cost of an eligible home battery, available to Tasmanian households. It uses the same certificate mechanism as the solar scheme, and the value per unit of storage steps down over time, so a current quote is the best guide to what it is worth.
Can I still get an interest-free energy loan in Tasmania?
Tasmania's Energy Saver Loan Scheme, which offered interest-free loans for solar and other energy-efficient products, closed in September 2025 after its funding was exhausted. Check whether any successor scheme has been introduced before assuming loan support is available, as government programs change.
