Yes, for most households. Rates vary between retailers and new customer offers are often cheaper than older plans. If you have not compared in the last 12 months, checking takes minutes and can lower both your usage and supply charges.
Usually a few business days, handled entirely by your new retailer. There is no interruption to your supply. The same poles and wires deliver your energy, only the billing company changes.
A reference price set by the Australian Energy Regulator for New South Wales, South Australia and south east Queensland. Victoria has its own version, the Victorian Default Offer. Retailers must show how their plans compare against it, which makes it a useful benchmark.
Most Australian plans are market offers with variable rates, which retailers can change with notice. Some retailers offer fixed rate plans that lock your rates in, usually for 12 months. Fixed gives certainty. Variable can be cheaper when the market falls.
Most current market offers have no exit fees, so switching costs nothing. Some older or fixed term contracts include an early termination fee, so check your current plan's terms before you move.
Usually, yes, although your current retailer may ask you to settle the outstanding balance. Every retailer must offer a hardship program, and you can ask about a payment plan before or after switching.
The two numbers that matter are your usage rate (cents per kWh) and daily supply charge (cents per day). Your bill also shows how your plan compares to the reference price in your area. Compare those figures between plans, not the total bill which varies with usage.
