There is no single best energy plan. There is a best plan for your usage, your state, and your meter. Here is how to actually find it in about ten minutes.
The best energy plan is the one with the lowest combination of usage rate (cents per kWh) and daily supply charge for the way your household uses power, measured against the reference price for your area. Retailers must show how each plan compares to the reference price, which makes it the one honest benchmark that works across every offer.
How to find your best plan in three steps
Pull the two numbers off your current bill
Your usage rate (cents per kWh) and your daily supply charge. These two numbers are your plan. The total bill amount is just those rates multiplied by your usage, so compare rates, not totals.
Check your plan against the reference price
Every retailer must state how a plan compares to the reference price (the Default Market Offer in NSW, SA and south east Queensland, or the Victorian Default Offer in Victoria). If your current plan sits above the reference price, you are paying more than the regulator's benchmark and switching will almost certainly save you money.
Compare every plan available at your address
Use the government's free comparison tools: Energy Made Easy (run by the Australian Energy Regulator) covers most states, and Victorian Energy Compare covers Victoria. They show every plan on the market with no commercial filtering. Bring the two numbers from step 1 and you will see exactly where you stand.
