Activate SIM Australia 2026

Activate your SIM in under 30 minutes, step by step.

The complete guide to activating a SIM card in Australia. ID verification, porting your number, eSIM setup, USSD codes, and what to do when activation fails. All in plain English.

Total time: 5 to 30 minutes for most activations
The short answer

Sign up with a provider online, verify your ID (driver's licence, passport, or Medicare card), pay your first recharge, then insert the SIM or scan the eSIM QR code. Most activations finish within 5 to 30 minutes. An eSIM is usually live within five minutes of scanning the QR code, a physical SIM is live within about 30 minutes of inserting it. If you ported a number across, your old SIM stops working when the new one activates.

Before you start

What you need to activate a SIM

A few things to have ready before you sign up. Without all three, activation will stall partway through and you will have to come back to it.

01

An unlocked phone

If your phone was on a contract with another provider, make sure it has been unlocked. Phones bought outright are usually already unlocked.

02

Photo ID

Driver's licence, passport, or Medicare card. Have the document in hand, you enter the details exactly as shown during sign-up.

03

Payment method

Credit card, debit card, or PayPal. Most providers do not accept BPAY for first activation, only for ongoing recharges.

The activation flow

Step by step, from sign-up to connected

Most providers run almost identical activation flows. Here is the universal Australian process, with provider-specific notes called out where they matter.

01
~ 2 min

Choose a plan and start sign-up online

Go to your chosen provider's website and start the sign-up flow. You will pick: your plan (data allowance, cycle length, intro promo), SIM type (physical SIM posted out, or eSIM delivered by email), and your number choice (new number, or port your existing one across).

02
~ 1 min

Verify your identity

Australian regulation requires identity verification before any SIM can be activated. You enter your ID details and the provider checks them electronically against government databases. The check usually completes in seconds.

  • Most common single ID: Australian driver's licence (card number and licence number).
  • Alternative: Passport (number, expiry, country of issue).
  • Or combined: Medicare card plus one other accepted ID for higher confidence checks.

Worth knowing. You can activate up to 5 SIM cards per person across all providers, this is an Australian regulatory limit, not a provider rule.

03
~ 2 min

Pay for your first recharge

Pay by card or PayPal. Activation cannot start until payment is confirmed. Most providers offer intro promo pricing for the first recharge (sometimes 50 to 70 percent off), the ongoing price kicks in from the second recharge onwards.

04
~ 1-3 days

Receive your SIM (or eSIM QR code)

For a physical SIM: posted to your address, usually arrives within 3 to 5 business days. Most providers ship free. For an eSIM: a QR code arrives by email within minutes of sign-up, often before you have closed the browser tab.

05
~ 5 min

Install the SIM in your phone

For a physical SIM: pop out your existing SIM tray with the included pin, place the new SIM in (look for the cut corner to align it), close the tray, and switch your phone on. For an eSIM: see the device-specific paths below.

iPhone eSIM

SettingsCellularAdd eSIMUse QR code

Scan the QR code from your provider email. The profile downloads in about 30 seconds. Name the line (e.g. "Personal") and choose your default for calls and data.

Android eSIM

SettingsNetworkSIMsAdd eSIM

Path varies slightly on Pixel and Samsung. On Samsung: Connections > SIM card manager. Pixel: Network and internet > SIMs. Scan the QR and the profile installs in seconds.

06
~ 5 min

Restart your phone and confirm activation

Restart your phone after inserting the SIM or installing the eSIM. This is the single most common fix when activation does not work first time. Once your phone is back on, you should receive a welcome SMS confirming your number is live.

Test the activation by: making a quick call (to yourself from a landline if you are alone), sending a test SMS, and loading a webpage with Wi-Fi switched off. If everything works, you are done. If you ported an existing number, your old SIM stops working within a few hours.

Diagnostics

When activation does not go to plan

"No service" after inserting the SIM
Restart your phone first. If still no service after 10 minutes, check the SIM is seated correctly in the tray, try removing and reinserting it. Check Settings to confirm the right SIM is set as the active line.
Activation SMS never arrived
Log into your provider dashboard, your number is shown there even before the SMS arrives. The SMS is usually sent within 5 minutes but can occasionally take up to an hour during peak periods.
Phone shows network but cannot make calls
Toggle airplane mode on and off for 30 seconds. Check that calls are enabled on the right line in Settings. If you ported a number, the new SIM may show signal but only carry calls after the port completes (a few hours).
Data not working but calls and SMS are fine
Check APN settings. Most current phones detect the right APN automatically, but if not, your provider's support page lists the APN to enter manually. Settings → Mobile data → APN on Android or Settings → Cellular → Cellular data network on iPhone.
eSIM QR code will not scan
Make sure the QR is the carrier QR (large square with corner markers) not a barcode. View it on a second device's screen at full size, then scan from your phone. If that fails, providers usually offer manual activation by entering the SM-DP+ address and activation code by hand.
ID verification keeps failing
Double-check every field matches your document exactly, including hyphens, spaces and middle names. Try a different accepted ID. If still failing, contact provider support, they can verify manually by phone.

FAQ

Common questions about SIM activation in Australia

How do I activate a SIM card in Australia?
Sign up online with a provider, verify your ID with a driver's licence, passport or Medicare card, pay for your first recharge, then insert the physical SIM into your phone or scan the eSIM QR code from your email. Activation usually completes within minutes once payment and ID verification are confirmed. You will receive a welcome SMS when your number is live.
How long does SIM activation take in Australia?
Most activations finish within 5 to 30 minutes after you complete sign-up and ID verification. eSIM is usually faster since there is no postage step, the QR code arrives by email within minutes. Physical SIMs may take longer if the SIM card itself is delivered by post, allow 3 to 5 business days for delivery, then about 30 minutes to activate.
What ID do I need to activate a SIM in Australia?
You can use an Australian driver's licence, passport, Medicare card, or a combination of two other accepted forms of ID. The provider verifies your identity electronically against government databases. Without ID verification, no SIM can be activated in Australia, this is a legal requirement, not a provider preference.
Can I activate a SIM without an Australian address?
Yes, but with more limited options. Most prepaid SIMs require an Australian address for billing or correspondence, though they accept hotels, hostels and other temporary addresses. International travellers can activate AU SIMs at the airport or pre-order online for delivery to an Australian address. Travel eSIMs from international providers do not require an Australian address.
My SIM activation failed, what should I do?
First, try restarting your phone, this fixes most activation issues. Then check the SIM is in correctly and the phone is unlocked. If you ported a number, confirm with your old provider that the port has completed. If activation still fails, contact the new provider's support, they can manually push activation from their end and usually resolve it within an hour.
Can I activate a SIM at the airport?
Yes, most major Australian airports have telecom kiosks selling and activating SIMs on the spot. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide international terminals all have provider booths or kiosks in the arrivals area. You can also pre-order an eSIM before flying and activate it from the airport's Wi-Fi within minutes.
How do I check my new mobile number after activating a SIM?
Each provider has a USSD code or app shortcut. For Lyca, dial *132# or 97#. For Superloop, log into the SuperHub app or send a test SMS to a friend. You can also find your number in your account dashboard on the provider's website after sign-up.
Can I keep my old mobile number when activating a new SIM?
Yes. When you sign up, give the new provider your existing mobile number and they handle the port from your old provider. The port usually takes a few hours to complete. Your old SIM continues to work until the new SIM activates, at which point the old one stops automatically. There is no PAC code step in Australia.
