Business broadband questions, answered

What's the difference between business nbn and home nbn?
The network is the same nbn. What business plans usually add is priority support, faster fault restoration targets, a static IP address, and sometimes a phone service. If your business stops when the internet stops, those extras are what you're really paying for.
Does my business need a static IP address?
You'll usually want one if you run your own servers, use CCTV or security systems you access remotely, connect to a VPN, or take card payments through certain systems. If you only use cloud software and email, you can often manage without one, but having it included costs you nothing on the plans above.
What speed does my business actually need?
A rough guide: up to 5 people on email and cloud tools are usually fine on nbn 50. Teams of 5 to 20 with video calls, POS systems and cloud software typically sit comfortably on 250 to 500. Larger teams, heavy uploaders and anyone moving big files want 1000 and up, and upload speed matters as much as download for that work.
Why can't I get every plan at my address?
The fastest tiers depend on the nbn technology at your premises. Plans in the 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400 tiers usually need a full-fibre (FTTP) connection, and some run on certain HFC connections. An address check with the provider is what confirms it, and in some areas a free fibre upgrade can unlock the faster tiers.
Are these plans locked into a contract?
The plans shown are month to month with no lock-in on the plan itself. One thing to watch: included hardware offers, like a free modem, can carry a payout fee if you cancel before a set period. Check the provider's hardware terms before you order if you might move or switch soon.
Can I keep my business phone number?
Usually yes. Porting an existing number to a new provider's phone service is standard practice, though timing varies by provider and it's worth arranging the port before your old service is cancelled so the number isn't lost. Your new provider handles most of the process.
